The Next Generation

Many times it seems as though people want to put down the next generation. That is to say, that many people seem to be concerned about the future when they look upon the youth of our day. There may be cause for concern to be sure - but I am not entirely convinced that things are as bad as they may seem.

Over the course of my time in the parish, I had the opportunity to work with some wonderful youth. In many respects some of them were among my most faithful and well catechized members. They were also acutely aware of the world around them and had solid political positions which they were able to defend.

Earlier this summer I was priviledged to spend time with several hundred Lutheran Youth at two of three Higher Things Conferances in St. Louis, MO and Scranton, PA. As I watched these youth and interacted with them during the conferance, I was impressed by their depth of knowledge, their confessional subscription, and their keen awareness of their world. These youth demonstrated that there is indeed hope for the next generation. They are not the end of the world bringing folks that many think they are. In fact, I would argue that they are the bringers of hope for their generation and those of their parents and grandparents.

Last week I had the privilege of working with over thirty youth who are interested in serving in a varity of church vocations. These kids were impressive. They know their bible and the confessions. I was impressed throughout the week at their eagerness to learn. Yes they enjoyed the fun activities but they really poured their heart into a research project that was part of the event they were attending. I became even more convinced that there is reason to hope for the future.

Don't sell the current youth of the world and the Church short. Some of these youth hold a great deal of hope for our future. They need our support and encouragement and they deserve it too! Sure, there are some in their generation that are problematic - so what?! There are such people in our generations also. Let's find the solid youth and help them grow and flourish!
